Venting a woodstove or fireplace insert directly into a masonry chimney can cause problems. Often, the masonry lining is poorly insulated and/or the chimney is too large to create efficient drafting of the smoke. Further compounding the problem, it is tempting to use a woodstove or fireplace insert with the draft controls closed almost off, creating a smoldering fire with smoke temperatures barely in the 200-350 degree range (using unseasoned wood or logs that are too big has the same effect). The "cool" smoke condenses in the flue and deposits on the walls as hardglaze creosote. This type of residue looks like shiny black tar: not only is the substance impossible to remove, it is very flammable and can easily lead to a dangerous chimney fire. Hardglaze creosote is acidic by nature and corrosive to the mortar in the chimney lining. Lining the flue with insulated stainless steel prevents these problems. Because the lining is custom-sized to the unit being vented, combustion is more efficient. And, because the lining is insulated, hardglaze creosote is never a problem. Installing a stainless steel liner maintains the integrity of the chimney and keeps it from deteriorating; it also enables your chimney sweep to better serve your safety by getting the chimney free of creosote every time he cleans it. |
